Microwave Cleaning Redesign

Microwaves are commonplace in residential environments as well as corporate. Respectively, there is an assumption that residentially-placed microwaves are cleaned out more regularily and effectively than those in corporate settings. What is common and fact between all microwave locations is that there is no uniform practice microwave manufacturers have in place to inform their users how to most effectively clean them.

︎ Role
Served a user research role interviewing microwave users in residential and corporate environments to understand the challenges or blockages they face when it comes to microwave cleaning. Translated these observations into design requirements which I passed to a designer - collaborated to redesign the process to yield the best design-led approach to clean microwaves and spread the message.

The Challenge

Getting users of microwaves to clean their microwaves effectively and regularly.

The Process

Research in homes of microwave users, understanding their habits and requirements. Research into existing microwaves and microwave manuals.

Ideating design interventions to solve the challenge.
Making paper prototypes.
Looking at the redesign of the microwave panel and the information architecture, to understand the flow of the user with respect to the interface.

The Redesign

Redesigning the microwave panel using Gestalt Principles to get users of microwaves to clean their microwaves effectively and regularly.

Utilizing the screen to display visuals to help guide the cleaning process.

Timeline to visually represent progress during the process.
